CNN's Popular News

The spectacle cannot be understood as a mere visual excess produced by mass-media technologies. It is a worldview that has actually been materialized, a view of a world that has become objective
The picture above is actress Renee Zelwegger taken from an article on CNN.com. The article talks about her upcoming role in a film and the difficulties she experienced in filming it. This was the second most popular news story of the day. In this time of political unrest and foreign war and all the important event of the day, the trials and tribulations of a movie actress have become the focus of our society; possibly a worldview. This spectacle of a news story is not just out there as a piece of news, but as a piece of public interest. It is not just a story; it is THE story. The mass media does not create this piece of news as a spectacle, the subjects of this story have made it popular and made it important.

I really like what your getting at here. I feel like I missed important news regarding healthcare reform this summer because Michael Jackson died. I get it, he's important, he was part of my childhood too, but healthcare is also important and actually has an immediate affect on my life. We may need to reexamine our spectacles.
